Ensenada
Ensenada is located in the state of Baja California, Mexico, approximately 125 km south of San Diego. It is also home to a Mexican naval base. Surrounded by low mountain ranges, the city enjoys a mild climate year-round—generally dry, with increased rainfall during the winter months.
Historically, the area was inhabited by semi-nomadic Yuman indigenous groups before European explorers arrived. Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo reached the nearby bay (now known as Bahía de Todos Santos) with his ships El Salvador and Victoria. On September 17, 1542, the settlement was named San Mateo. Later, in 1602, Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno renamed it Ensenada de Todos Santos, meaning “Bay of All Saints.”
